I watch women cricket, and you?

After almost a lifetime of following cricket, first on radio and later on television, I have switched on to watching women cricket in the last couple of years.

दिल ने फिर याद किया बर्क़ सी लहराई है

Lyrics are to music that heart is to the body, and that has what made film music endure. It is, however, another matter that lyricists (barring exceptions) have rarely got their deserving due despite the songs staying in listners’ memory. Great lyrics composed in sync with the mood of the words are remembered without any conscious efforts.

Fusion lends distinction to melody

A friend who often ignored my music notes got back to me to convey that gradually these notes have helped generate an interest in music. He generously added that with the help of these notes, he has learnt that when there is chaos and confusion all around, the soulful music lends mental peace and tranquility.

Songs with Therapeutic Value

Bengaluru-based columnist Pragyan Mohanty, believes one Rafi song a day keeps doctor away. To me, this could be the greatest tribute to Rafi sa’ab for gifting us with several soulful numbers based on rich poetry of his times. No surprise, Rafi sa’ab is considered ‘God’s Own Voice’, and writer-poet Gulzar defines him as a holy man - a ‘Pir’. This in no way takes credit away from other singers who too contributed some songs with therapeutic value. That Rafi sa’ab contributed the most is what made him distinct.

Time to lighten your heart

Music is an integral part of nature. Every action in nature has its own rhythms. Be it day or night, music remains eternal to all that occurs in nature. There is music in flowing water, blowing wind, buzzing insects, chirping birds, bubbling brooks, and croaking frogs.

Celebrating the heart breaks - the Bollywood way

Some regular readers of my 'Music Notes' provide me with interesting insights and reflections. An avid listener thinks that music reciprocates our feelings, soothing nerves like none other. It is an under-rated therapy, a kind of a placebo. At times, lyrics act like placebo.

We are trying to create a platform where our readers will find a place to have their say on the subjects ranging from socio-political to culture and society. We do have our own views on politics and society but we expect friends from all shades-from moderate left to moderate right-to join the conversation. However, our only expectation would be that our contributors should have an abiding faith in the Constitution and in its basic tenets like freedom of speech, secularism and equality. We hope that this platform will continue to evolve and will help us understand the challenges of our fast changing times better and our role in these times.
